Um Qais: A Historic Gem Overlooking Lake Tiberias
Perched on a plateau with breathtaking views of northern Jordan, the glittering waters of Lake Tiberias (Sea of Galilee), and the Golan Heights, Um Qais is home to the ancient ruins of Gadara, a Roman city of the Decapolis League. Though smaller than other Decapolis cities, Gadara’s charm lies in its stunning location and rich history.
Archaeologists believe that ongoing excavations will reveal even more of this ancient city’s grandeur. From the Roman theater, visitors can enjoy panoramic views of Lake Tiberias, northern Palestine, and beyond.
Um Qais is also linked to biblical history as the site where Jesus performed the miracle of casting demonic spirits into a herd of swine, which then rushed into the sea. A must-visit for history enthusiasts and spiritual seekers alike.
